Suitcases and Web Spaces by David Taylor
For almost two years now I have had an imaginary internet business.
It’s been great planning my success and imagining how fantastic life is going to be.
How am I going to accomplish this great success? By following several online courses, reading several ebooks, collecting several PLR articles and ebooks in a folder on my hard drive and leaving them there.
Also I have tried most auto posting software and ‘Business in a Box’ type offers. They’ve been great. Here’s what you do. You sign up for the offer and you get all excited. You get some money and give it to the guru in question. Then you get more excited. Probably because THIS program is ‘Push-Button Simple’ All I’ll need to do is click a mouse every so often, for which I may find time between holidays, then I can retire in comfort. I can of course click the mouse if I need a cash injection ‘virtually forced into my account’. The sales page said so.
So why, might I ask, am I not writing this from a beach? Why don’t I have a Ferrari in my driveway? I clicked the mouse! Where’s my reluctantly forced cash? I’ll click it again to be sure. Still nothing! What am I missing?
This is why I am calling it my imaginary internet business. It existed only in my head. The only cash sucking going on was out of my account, which I had planned to claim back “…when I eventually get going.”
So this article is serving as both my confession and my declaration of change. I remember clearly at school being told that the power of communication through speech and written word means that humans can bypass the process of natural selection or ’survival of the fittest’. We can learn from the mistakes of others and copy the successes of others. In the Animal World, those that don’t know how to survive will die unless they can learn. So I hope that this confession is read by someone who is just starting out and is dazzled by all the great offers and courses. I hope you will recognise the patterns I mentioned earlier. And learn from my mistakes.
You see, I recently had a light bulb moment; My wife gave me a light bulb.
She was trying to make me laugh because I was so frustrated with my lack of success.
“It’s like I’m waiting for some kind of light bulb moment when inspiration will hit me.” I had said.
My wife walked to a lamp, took out the bulb and gave it to me. Her cheeky smile telling me it was supposed to be a joke. But its meaning to me was different and perfectly clear. What I was waiting for was never going to arrive. So why not just decide that the moment is NOW! It was so simple.
The painful truth: internet marketing is a business, not a hobby, if you want to make a good income. There are NO magic buttons, NO cash sucking sites and NOTHING forced into my account.
Anything going into my account would have to be cheerfully put there by people to whom I have provided value through information or service. As Earl Nightingale said in ‘THE STRANGEST SECRET’, the only people who make money work at the Mint. Everyone else has to earn it. Simple, eh?
I now have one question which is going to form the basis of my new, and very real, business:
How can I help you?
If I can ask that question to enough people, then act on their answer, I will succeed. The money comes as a result of success; success does not come as a result of money. My emphasis is now on helping people. That is all.
Why ‘Suitcases and Web Spaces’?
The initial idea for this essay, as it has become, was as a result of my answer to a comment on my blog at http://davidtayloruk.com.
I made the comparison between succeeding in business and planning a holiday. I then spent most of the day chuckling about the thought of planning my holiday the way I previously planned my business. I think it would go something like this:
I get a brochure about holidays to Spain. It sounds great and we put down a deposit. We buy suitcases, learn a bit of Spanish and get some sexy swimwear.
I get another brochure meanwhile, about Norwegian coastal cruises. It sounds great and we put down a deposit. We buy jumpers, mittens and cardigans. We figure that we can do the Spanish holiday later.
We get another brochure…….
You get the picture. By the end of the year we have had a great time planning vacation activities in various places, but never actually got the experience! Plus, we’re out of pocket on deposits.
Like success, vacations require planning, which is fun, but also require action to make things happen, some of which won’t be fun. But if you can push through the less-than-fun parts, the rewards are more than worth it.
